Preparing exceptional food in Bucks County and the greater Philadelphia area for over 20 years

We are happy to announce that Jamie Hollander Gourmet Foods will contribute all proceeds from our new Seasonal Salad directly to the Heritage Conservancy’s Farm to Table event. The Heritage Conservancy does great work supporting land conservation and historic preservation through its many projects and services, all of which are critical to the character of Bucks County. Read more about what they do on their website, www.heritageconservancy.org. The Conservancy’s popular Farm to Table event focuses on the fantastic local food of Bucks County. We were thrilled to participate in the event last year, when our Executive Chef Luke Smithson did a smashing job presenting local food to happy guests.

Our first Seasonal Salad is a Spring Salad with Grilled Shrimp that features wild Bucks County ramps, marinated grilled shrimp, and spring lettuces with asparagus, capers, Parmesan cheese, and a basil ramp vinaigrette. Ramps are hallmarks of Spring and are also known as Spring onions or wild leeks; they have a garlic-like odor and onion flavor.

We will be featuring our Seasonal Salads throughout the spring and summer months, with the salad ingredients changing to highlight local produce. To get our Today’s Specials delivered directly to your inbox, just sign up here.

Bev is featuring four incredible artisan cheeses from England. Spenwood is an unpasteurised sheep’s milk cheese is made at Spencer’s Wood in Berkshire, by Anne and Andy Wigmore. Spenwood has a firm texture and a delicious, distinctly fruity and mellow flavor, which the Wigmores recommend pairing with red Rioja.

Ticklemore is a lovely goat cheese made by Sharpham Cheese Dairy on a one thousand year old farm near Devon. The Ticklemore cheese, named after a street in Totnes, is hand molded into colanders, turned by hand several times in the first 48 hours, then hand salted before being removed from the colanders and matured for several months to produce a delicious, light and delicate cheese.

If you’re not a fan of blue cheese, or just on the fence about it, Cornish Blue will make you a convert. It’s a “gentle” cows’ milk cheese from Cornwall, and it has a wonderful creamy finish that won’t overwhelm your palate. Truly delightful.

Finally, Keen’s Cheddar is made the traditional way by the Keen family in Wincanton, Somerset. This family has been making cheese since 1899, so it’s safe to say they have it down perfectly. Their cloth-bound cheddar cheese matures for over 12 months, during which time it’s regularly turned, cleaned, and sampled to ensure that each cheese develops the characteristic moist texture, tangy bite and full-bodied flavor.

Our Cheesemonger, Bev, has created fondue kits that feature a combination of two shredded cheeses: cave-aged Gruyère and Ely’s Washington Crossing cheese, a delicate, aged cheese made locally in Newtown, PA. The kits also include apples and bread cubes from our fresh, crusty baguettes. You’ll just need your own dry white wine to complete the recipe. Bev’s fondue kits serve two and are available for a limited time; call or stop in to order yours. If you are looking to make more of a meal of your fondue, you could also dip cooked meats such as sausage slices or cubed chicken or ham. Roasted or boiled baby potatoes, blanched broccoli and cauliflower florets, and roasted or steamed asparagus spears are also great vehicles for fondue. Perfect for a winter evening.

Our Event Coordinator, Kate, can help you plan all aspects of your party or special event. If you’re hosting a party at home, deciding what beverages to serve and how much to get can be a huge hurdle. First, you need to count on 1 to 3 alcoholic drinks per hour for each adult. If you’re serving beer, count on 12 ounces per serving. A serving of wine is typically  6 ounces, and you can usually get 4 glasses out of one 750ml bottle. You can pour about 20 one-ounce shots from a 750ml bottle of alcohol. Even in the cooler weather, don’t forget the ice: Get about 2-3 lbs. of ice per guest. “I’m always surprised how receptive guests are to our non-alcoholic beverages at an event,” Kate says. She recommends Blackberry Iced Tea, Thyme-Infused Lemonade, or Watermelon Limeade, all available at Jamie Hollander Gourmet Foods. Finally, you always want to provide bottled water and coffee. “A lot of our clients say they don’t need coffee because nobody drinks it at night, but I find that when most people are drinking alcohol early in the evening, they always come looking for coffee towards the end of the event. Make a small pot just in case.”

Are you hosting a party soon? Our Event Coordinator, Kate, has years of experience planning parties of all sizes, even on short notice. She offers these great tips for planning the food you’ll need for a successful and stress-free party. The first step is to think about a few simple questions: How many guests are you inviting? Are they mostly men, women, or both? Will kids be included?

With these answers in mind, you can then choose the right food for your party. If you’re planning on just having light fare, mostly appetizers for instance, Kate recommends choosing 6-8 different kinds of appetizers or hors d’oeuvres per guest. You can plan on 2-4 pieces of each type per guest. If you are going to serve appetizers for about an hour before serving dinner, Kate suggests a variety of 4-6 types of appetizers and 2 pieces per guest.

When you’re planning your menu, we make it easy: our Take Home Catering Menu has everything you need. Kate likes the gourmet sandwich trays because there’s no reheating required, or consider an antipasto platter or an assortment of hot hors d’oeuvres. Everything that requires reheating comes with easy-to-follow instructions. If you’re planning a last-minute get-together, you can check out our specials in the prepared food case, or frozen items in the freezer case (pot pies are a popular option). For the best selection, please order early. We have many items available on short notice but, especially near holidays, orders are subject to availability. You can always contact our event planners at 215-862-9809 for planning help or to place an order.
